Terminology for the demigods

I asked folks the other day which term they prefer: “capsuleer” or “podder”, neglecting to include the common “pod pilot” as well. As you might expect from as varied a bunch as make up our little community, the answers didn’t reflect any sort of consensus.

“Capsuleer” probably has been the most popular term for a while. Mynxee likes this one: “It speaks of adventure and has a bit of an elitist ring to it, as fitting for our status in New Eden.” PsycheDiver and Scopique also prefer this one. I don’t like it because it has too many syllables and doesn’t roll off the tongue.

“Pod pilot” is also common, preferred by Kirith Kodachi for its “guttural” sound. It sounds very formal to me, though, although alliteration always attracts. (See what I did there?)

I like “podder” because it’s short, captures the meaning quickly, and has a quick burst of sound. PsycheDiver doesn’t prefer it, though, because it “sounds like someone who is always podding other capsuleers.” (I don’t have a problem with this, heh heh.)

And somebody always wants to be different, like Biomassed who chooses “none of the above”.

What about you?

  • I'm a pilot!
  • I'm gonna have to go with "none of the above" either.

I sit in a nice and big comfy central command chair!
  • Personally, I would prefer to go by "pod pilot". Like it was said, it has a sort of formalness to it yet the "gutteral" as Kirrith said. Sort of a nice blend of yin yang which I feel defines Eve.

Besides, to me the word "capsuleer" just reminds me too much of Disney's "Mouseketeer". And "podder"...well, just feels and sounds like pirate slang which is why I guess I haven't heard that one used often myself :P

I am familiar with both Capsuleer and Pod Pilot, but not at all with podder. I gravitiate towards the terms that are more commonly used.
For me, capsuleer is the formal term, while pod pilot is the common, every day term.
  • "Mouth feel," that's the phrase I'd sought. What do you think about the 'mouth feel' for 'podder'?
  • It's interesting how different people perceive different words...and how different words appeal because of the way they feel when we say them. In the food industry, there is a quality known as "mouth feel." Personally, I find "capsuleer" easy to say. I suspect the appeal of its "mouth feel" is related to how each of us pronounces it. I say it as CAP sah leer, downplaying the "s". I've heard others say it cap SULE ear which doesn't seem to roll as nicely off the tongue.
  • "Egger" is also pretty popular, bit more of a slang term. I mostly use capsuleer myself.
