I don't agree Casiella. As you said, it's a game we all love, including Vol. He's passionate about it in the same way most of us are. His ideas might not have widespread appeal, but what's wrong with him trying to discuss them?

I agree in thinking that his ideas would fundamentally alter the game in a negative way, but I'd rather tell him that than go "Nyah nyah, tears!"

@Bel: I agree that some of Vol's responses in the transcript were fair discussions of tweaks to the existing mechanics. For example, the bit that started the discussion regarding faction police spawns at stations and gates: I disagree with it, but I can respect it, just as I believe that insurance payouts for CONCORD destruction of a player ship should be removed.

When someone devolves into complaints that the overall design goals aren't fair and that CCP needs to substantially rework their approach to the game that we all love, however, we've gone beyond the sort of "hey how about if they did X" conversation that all MMOG players do, and well into territory that directly attacks the foundation of the game. I think the "tears" comments in that sort of context can be well-founded.

I think Vol is missing the point when he says that PvP shouldn't be forced on others. There are very few actions in EVE that do not have an effect on other players. Mining is a PvP activity. Trading is a PvP activity. In fact any activity which has an effect on the economy could technically be classed as a PvP activity.

Its not that EVE is a game with a bit of pew pew PvP in it. EVE is a PvP game not a PvE game with PvP tacked on. Everything is PvP to some extent. Its what makes it the game that it is. Without non-consensual PvP we wouldn't have the rich and complex environment which makes EVE the best MMO on the go at the moment.

Totally off-topic of current comments thread but dude...duuuuuuudeee! You have -THE- coolest looking and best laid-out blog I've ever seen! Kinda makes me want to suddenly, ninja (hah! see what I did there?) the whole thing. Link added to my (substantially less cool) blog, and I'll keep you posted on the fail-threat situation. Keep up the good work man.

My thanks to StrangeApe and Bel Amar.

I can't say that it bothers me if anyone disagrees with me, but I have tried to base my points more so on an objective desire for balance than on promoting a personal preference. I would hope everyone would find merit in that.

I have posted a my own response to the conversation, just click on my name above.

Have to agree with StrangeApe. At some point that discussion became more about Vol, than the issue he was arguing. It shouldn't have done that. The comments on "tears" etc are effectively just ways of poking your tongue out at him and choosing not to have a discussion. Fair enough response to a one post wonder alt on the forums, but a bit unfair to someone who is trying to engage in a real discussion.

And for the record, I don't actually agree with any of Vol's suggestions...

Ninja salvaging doesn't need a hit because they specifically designed the profession to work this way. Hell, it needs a boost to be able to find wrecks by themselves in space.

And I agree with one bit: no need to bash the player for having an opinion, even if it's wrong. ;)

+ 1 Vol. You have to at least give the guy respect, because at some point, this discussion turned into a vol bashing instead of a discussion, because while people disagreed with him, he never turned to insults or carebear tears and shit like some people did up there.

And frankly, i agree with most of what Vol said. I believe he was trying to relate the fact that in his opinion, some mechanics are broken, especially regarding suicide ganking, which was given as an example. There is next to no penalty to the gankers. Same for ninja salvagers. Yes, you have the option to fight back, but you'll have to take a security status hit. Why should that be? Why should i be the only one loosing something, when i'm the victim? (Yes, i know this was taken more from an exemple of ninja salvaging, but the only time i've been suicide ganked was by my own damn fault, and i lost 500mil. Lesson learned)

I agree that eve is a pvp game, but can any of you guys tell me what are the penalties to pirates? YOu can't come to high sec, wait no, you can come in a POD, and if you keep your security above X, anyone shooting you will be shot. Maybe you can't dock in a station. Wait, no, there are also stations in low sec. And those suicide gankers, they do have to invest a bit of money on their ships....wait, no, the insurance covers the cost.

I'm no carebear, as i live in nullsec and pvp as much a RL allows me these days, but i was a high sec dweller, and can relate to what Vol is saying. And this, while it may sound possibly insulting to some, is written in the spirit of discussion. In any case, flame away if you feel the need to, i'll check back in a few hours.

And Vol. Good Job mate!
