Friday Flash Fiction 1: EVE Style

This year, I want to focus a lot more on EVE fiction. I have a lot of thoughts about my approach to it and what works, but I think “flash fiction” (very short stories) works really well in an existing universe where your audience doesn’t need any worldbuilding.

So with that in mind, I will kick off a year of Friday flash fiction, EVE style.

That means I will post a small prompt every Friday. The following Tuesday, I’ll update the post with links to your own stories on your own blogs or even the EVE forum (preferably submitted through the comments here). This might consist of a phrase, or an object, or a location, or something else. Use it as the core theme, the starting sentence, or anything else; you just have to include it somewhere in the story. And the story should be really short. Definitely under one thousand words, but even greater brevity has great value. If you can tell a cohesive story (character, plot, theme) in a bare few sentences, go for it.

Let me know if you have any questions, but let’s keep it simple. Focus on showing us how you see the cold, dark, gritty universe of EVE.

This week’s prompt:

“If this goes on…”

If you wrote a piece and I missed it, please let me know in the comments!

A short, off the cuff piece of fiction inspired by your prompt and the frenetic activity that always follows finding a wormhole on scan when mining in our W-Space.

However, it was clear that I was not getting out alive. I needed a plan. “Maybe they will go away,” I thought. I took another sip of tea and waited. And waited. Some left, more arrived. I rented a room and got some sleep, waking up about five hours later. On my way back to the observation deck I noticed that every person I met looked at me and smiled as if they knew a secret joke, and it involved me. My heart sank as I saw even more ships and more wreckage outside. “If this goes on much longer,” I thought “I’m going to need an office here.” I needed a better plan.
