Exploration Myrmidon

'Myrmidon' by nekonoir

After Rettic mentioned his desire for a ship he’d never have to refit, the ensuing discussion reminded me of how well the Myrmidon did as an all-purpose low-sec solo exploration ship. If that’s your thing, then this ship will do quite well. I don’t quite recall which hybrid charges work best for this purpose, but they really don’t matter as the drones make up most of your offensive punch anyway. If you work primarily in a given area, you could replace the EANM with region-specific hardeners. And with 400 m3 of cargo capacity, you can pull up quite a bit of loot before needing to do something with it.

Assuming the pirates don’t get you first.

UPDATE: Thanks to sharp-eyed commenter knucklesamich, I’ve made a key change so that the fitting actually works. Due to my user error when tinkering with Python Fitting Assistant (pyfa) and trying to check actual capacitor usage, the old fitting went way over the CPU limitations of the Myrmidon. I recommend replacing the Omnidirectional Tracking Link with a Cap Recharger II. However, if you find yourself able to handle incoming fire with just one active armor repairer most of the time, you might think about using a named target painter instead. Sorry about that, and props to knucklesamich!

UPDATE 2: Some folks have asked about powergrid usage. Remember that you only need to online modules that you can use, so you might not want to keep your analyzer and codebreaker online at the same time.

  • I didn't have much trouble with it. Just used rat-specific hardeners and upgraded the cap battery to a large (per Koj's suggestion in the comments here).

I couldn't tank very well, and the damage was anemic. And I do have decent drone skills, T2 lights and mediums.

    Hi,
perhaps some of you guys can answer me a noobish question: you fit a mix of cap rechargers and batteries. I know that because the cap recharge time of a ship is constant, increasing cap capacity also leads to a higher recharge rate.

However, when playing around in EFT, it seems that I always get a better cap stability (I'm looking at the "Cap stable at X%" number), when fitting purely for recharge (swap the battery for recharger, same with the rigs). Am I looking at the wrong number, or what is the benefit of batteries?
  • I tried this fit in low-sec anomalies last night. No problems whatsoever until I ran into a bunch of battleships. I left before really testing it against them since I had a hold full of salvage and loot anyway.
  • Koj
It might be my fitting skills.
I was able to upgrade the medium battery for a large one and replaced the guns for their T2 variant. Had to downgrade the cloak to T1 though.
To make it fit gridwise, keep the analyzer or the codebreaker offline.
  • What sucked in particular? Couldn't tank, or took forever to kill stuff, or...? How are your drone skills?

This is built in particular for K-space radar / mag sites. If you hit anomalies, unknowns, or W-space, it's a different environment altogether. And don't forget to tank for your regional rats.

Was dying to try this. played around and got it to fit. So everyone knows, it SUCKS at combat sites.
  • Masada
Lol... didn't see the other many comments... good fit!

The Myrmidon is one of the few curious ships that gets no specific turret bonus. It gets Drone bonus and Armor Rep bonus. As such you can swap the rails for Projectiles and save cap usage on the Myrm.
  • Thanks for pointing this out, I see where I made an error! Working on an update now.
  • I'll double-check once I'm back at home, but this fit just fine in pyfa.
  • Ah, right - got a bit hazy on the bonuses. Then change to projectiles by all means - t2 meds don't take too long either ;)
  • knucklesamich
I hate to be that guy, but this is 536.25/500 CPU @ all level V. Can't fit even with a 5% implant.
  • Drone boats are perfect for the job. I use an arbitrator which had repayed itself over more than once by what I pull out of profession sites. Can this Myrm stand up against combat sites?
  • Myrmidons don't get a damage bonus to their turrets of any sort (10% increase to drone hitpoints and damage dealt by drones, and 7.5% increase to armor repair amount per level), so projectile turrets can do a great job. Or energy turrets if you just want to save your cargo hold, I suppose. Thanks for the reminder!
  • Might want to fit medium projectiles - while going against the damage bonus, the fact that they don't use cap and that you can change ammo types makes them great on a Myrm
  • Gonna try this little setup once the kids are in bed tonight! Thanks for sharing, I'll let you know how that setup works for me!
