Passive voice is useful, but should be used sparingly. Over time, and as grammar teachers apply the red ink, the student hears "Don't use passive voice" instead of "Don't use passive voice so much."

Fish: gh as in 'tough', o as in 'women', ti as in 'action'

I am usually one of the guilty, I do reread my work but once I have formed the blind spot for a spelling error, it damn well stays there. If I am doing accents or colloquialisms then the spelling errors are on purpose . . . but most times they are just errors, plain and simple.

m

I'm not sure how many of these I'm guilty of doing myself (I didn't even know about the passive voice until about 15 minutes ago), but I'm definitely going to need to remedy any kind of fault I may have in my writing.

Your grasp of the English language puts mine to shame (and I AM English!). I have to admit I tend to write my blogs, or forum posts, with a very lackadaisical approach to English which isn't something I am especially proud of. On the other hand I enjoy writing as a means of relaxation and I can't shake the feeling that if I sat down to write with a thesaurus in one hand and a dictionary in another I'd lose that experience.

C.

The Grammar Girl podcast (http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/) is not a bad way to go either. She's "spunky". Had never heard of the ghoti so I looked it up. See? I learned something. Thanks Cas!

Your flash fiction fridays have given me the desire to become a little better at my writing. In fact, I'm trying to find the time to do some more writing things, even if I don't make the deadlines, like for Silver Night's contest or EvEmonkey's (missed the last one).

I have read "On Writing" by Stephen King and, since then, I try to avoid adverbs. Difficultly!
