Exploration Proteus

'Long-tailed skipper' by Vicki's Nature

Urbanus proteus

I’ve wanted a strategic cruiser for some time, but held off from training Racial Cruiser V because I didn’t have tech II projectiles (for a Loki) or missiles (for a Tengu). Then I realized, hmm, I do have skills for tech II drones (light and medium) and decent drone skills overall, plus pretty good armor tanking.

So here’s the Proteus fit I think I’ll use for lowsec and nullsec exploration, primarily for radar (hacking) sites. The targeting delay introduced by the cloaking device won’t matter so much to a more-or-less focused drone boat; the railguns mostly help grab aggro and add a bit of DPS. The philosophy grows from my exploration Myrmidon, and you may want to replace one of the rigs with a gravity capacitor.

According to PyFA, with this setup and my skills (plus Gallente Strategic Cruiser and Subsystems all to IV), you’ll end up with something like 27k EHP against a uniform distribution. I tuned this particular setup against Sansha rats, but of course you’ll want to adjust to your region. In particular, note that it won’t be as strong against Angels due to the Proteus’s natural weakness to explosive damage. I can tank 484 HP/s, which should really do just fine in most cases. I might end up tweaking that down, actually, if needed, so I can improve capacitor stability (this ship’s primary weakness).

I welcome additional thoughts and suggestions.

wow i never see membranes lol, swap them to hardeners :)
  • I always list meta 0 in fitting posts but buy the best named stuff that makes sense for the given purpose. And I do think I'll be running with an Ishtar first, at least in low-sec (where I mostly live anyway).
  • I can't believe I said "cyclones". I meant "cycles".
  • That Proteus fit is making me want to vomit a little:

    (1) T1 guns on a T3 ship? Seriously? At the very least, spring for good named ones... you'll get slightly more effective guns that use less CPU/Grid.
    (2) Two armor reppers on a ship with no cap mods or a cap booster? You're going to run them for about 2 cyclones and suddenly all your cap will be gone and you will be dead in the water.

Additionally I'd have to go with what sage suggested above. An Ishtar will be cheaper and probably just as effective or more effective for what you want to do.

Drop 2 of the Railz and put in a tractor beam, shortens the time you need for salvaging
and maybe a small RR. Your drones are your DPS, so no need for the other two railguns, the remote rep
is for the occasional event where you Mighty want to repair your drones but don't want to dock up
    for it.

    Cheers Saunee
  • Seems like you're trying to get all your DPS is from drones. In that case, use an Ishtar, not a Proteus.

A 500 DPS tank is definitely not enough to tank higher level lowsec plexes; use active hardeners and swap them in station as necessary. And remove the auxiliary thruster rig; you won't be able to outrun much of anything anyways without nanoing. The rig slot is better used for a CCC rig or something similar.

Also, I'd highly discourage flying in lowsec with a non covert T3 ship, as you WILL be hunted. Any T3 ship is a killmail waiting to happen.
  • You might want to use at the very least meta 1 guns - cheaper and more efficient than meta 0, never prepare fittings with meta 0 as a rule, whatever the ship.
  • Could indeed do with some T2 guns, or best named if fitting restrictions or skills are an issue. I think you'll be using them for more than just pulling aggro, right? And I second the advice on the DCII, the suitcase saves lives in more than just pvp!

I personally much like the all-in-one solution but T3 carries a big pricetag, so would love to hear some reports on this. I've been tinkering with similar setups for both the Tengu and Legion but so far haven't gotten around testing them on SiSi yet.
  • ARRRGGGGHHH NOOOOOOOOOOO!

Sorry mate but If you can't fit T2 guns on it yet... don't use the ship.

I would also suggest a DCII for the lows as it will boast your resists and about double your EHP.

I have a great fit for a Proteus on my other computer. I will post it for you soon.

Be aware tho my fit is around 700million tho you could downgrade it. It solo's level 3 WH's so with a bit of a downgrade to T2 should be fine for your Radar sites.
  • I hope you can do a followup post to let us know how this works out. I am about to grab Gallente cruiser 5, so it would be nice to get your input on using the Proteus.
  • Thanks. I'll keep this in the books until I can afford one of these beauties.
