Sandbox careers

'Sandbox' by katmere

EVE’s design has some careers built into it: miners, militia, manufacturers, and so on. Of course, one pilot can do all these different things, but the professions themselves derive directly from the design.

Other professions, though, have emerged from the world’s sandbox design, created by players. Bankers, scammers, ninja salvagers, even (originally) mining leaders.

So what sandbox professions do you really like? Maybe you practice them yourself, or maybe you just enjoy the fact that they exist, but which ones really expand the world for you?

I would say, I'm looking for more gambling in Eve - I know there are larger pot poker games, but other games would be nice. Parimutuel betting would be interesting; as would a link to meatspace, too. Sort of a virtual numbers running game.
  • I had no idea this even existed until just now... O_o
  • Player-created social professions exist to lesser degrees in other games, but so few MMORPGs try for the sandbox model. So what new ones can players create?
  • Smuggling within EVE needs a good look from CCP, including boosters but extending to other forms of contraband as well. Then again, lowsec / nullsec hauling has much of the "feel" of smuggling, particularly running gate and station camps...
  • Your T2 insurance program sounds risky at best, but I would certainly like to see you develop the idea in more detail!

The social services aspect of this game are what fascinate me the most as I read more blogs and gather more information. I have used Estel Arador's free JC service and that alone has opened up the game for me. I even read about Wensley's PvP scholarship program and it sounds like it may grow into something.

I am just not used to playing a game where the sense of community is strong enough to warrant the idea of social services. Let alone people actually taking the time to put the services together. It's probably the best part of EVE.

I too am looking to try to get into smuggling/trafficking as well as booster production. It doesn't seems like there is as much viability as there might have been, but then again it's all so hush-hush. It seems as though ANYONE involved possessing any information ain't sayin sh.....I don't even know how much of a market there is (if any).

I need to get skills up to make aspects of it more realistic for my toon, but I like the idea that it is possible. Now to figure it all out.....
  • Journalism. It's something I've always wanted to do in EVE, and I'm only just getting into it. Is great fun, but not all that proitable yet.

I like all those nice people with inventive ideas that make my time in eve better. Like the jump-clone company you can join to circumvent the standing requirement to create a jump clone or the people offering a service to get you out of a wormhole when you got lost... and let's not forget Eve-U and Agony Unleashed who help you learn what the tutorial's cannot. The Eve Universe has actually quite good social services the more I think about it
  • I'm really interested in 'smuggling' as a sandbox profession. I think it used to be more viable and common a few years ago in EVE, but I hardly see anything on it anymore. But I just see that as an opportunity to find the need if it's there.

It's designing website banners and corp logos considered a sandbox profession? :P

Corp/alliance founding services (like Hardin) and corporate espionage, the two things that to me show just the diversity of what is capable in EVE.
  • Information systems management and redistribution of knowledge. While you will get no killmails, there is a whole heck of a lot of challenge and hence fun to be had. It's amazing what game mechanics and a healthy dose of meta-gaming allow one to divine about any particular player or group of players.
  • I've been a CEO for a while but it is the more sandboxy stuff which appeals to me as well. I have been running a small bank for a few months but am now thinking about trying to run a T2/hauler based insurance company. I have no idea whether this could make money but I think it might be a fun experiment either way! That's the great thing about eve - you are free to try out pretty much any crazy idea you have!

With that in mind I think the guys a EoH poker deserve a special mention for using the game mechanics in a very different way.
