Poll: Favorite EVE map source

'Google Sky Map' by Johan Larsson

I haven’t run a poll in a while, so I thought I’d ask:

What's your favorite EVE map source?

  • DOTLAN (57%, 47 Votes)
  • Ombey (25%, 21 Votes)
  • In-game (10%, 8 Votes)
  • Other (please comment!) (8%, 7 Votes)

Total Voters: 83

Text color poll

I’ve received some reader feedback regarding text colors for this blog and I’d like to get your opinion. Do you prefer the current setup (light text on a dark background) or the inverse? Does it hurt your eyes to read it, one way or the other? Do you only read the feed anyway?

Which sort of text coloring do you prefer?

  • Light text on a dark background (90%, 18 Votes)
  • Dark text on a light background (10%, 2 Votes)

Total Voters: 20

Your thoughts (and of course comments below) will help me guide me as I decide whether or not to make a change. Thanks!

Poll: EVE financial independence

This time I’ve chosen to ask a really simple question, one I threw out on Twitter yesterday:

Is your preferred EVE activity (mining, piracy, whatever) financially self-sustaining?

  • Yes (58%, 26 Votes)
  • No (42%, 19 Votes)

Total Voters: 45

Note that, for the purposes of this poll, alliance or corp funding counts as “yes” as long as you feel like you actually contribute to your group. (And if you’re not, why are they giving you ISK?)

As always, please expand upon your thoughts in the comments below.

T2 Frigate Types

Now that I can at least fly all types of tech 2 frigates (though currently only Caldari models), I thought I’d ask other folks which ones they prefer.

  • Assault Ship (40%, 12 Votes)
  • Covert Ops (27%, 8 Votes)
  • Interceptor (20%, 6 Votes)
  • Stealth Bomber (13%, 4 Votes)
  • Electronic Attack Ship (0%, 0 Votes)

The No Name Podcast?

After my recent appearance on Missions Collide (which made it to the main page listing for videogame podcasts!), I thought I might experiment with something similar and yet different. So I’ve started planning the production of a podcast / show dealing with EVE Online fiction. Specifically, I want to talk about official storylines, player-written fiction, background (“Prime Fiction”), et cetera.

That part has gotten well under way, but I need a name. I like podcasts whose names come from within the EVE universe, and so after annoying quite a few members of the Tweet Fleet with my pickiness, five candidates remain. I’d like your input…

What name works best for an EVE podcast focused on fiction, news, and storylines?

  • Station Side (50%, 8 Votes)
  • Communication Relay (19%, 3 Votes)
  • Neural Booster (13%, 2 Votes)
  • Fluid Router (13%, 2 Votes)
  • Sensor Link (5%, 1 Votes)

Weekly Poll: Racial Backstories

This Week: Racial Backstories

Backgrounds matter.

Backgrounds matter.

As an avowed lore geek, I really enjoy getting into the backgrounds of the four major races (Amarr, Caldari, Gallente, Minmatar) in New Eden. So, from that, this week’s poll:

Which EVE racial backstory is the most interesting to you?

  • Minmatar (63%, 10 Votes)
  • Amarr (25%, 4 Votes)
  • Caldari (6%, 1 Votes)
  • Gallente (6%, 1 Votes)

Total Voters: 16

Last Week: Weapon System Types

The results here really surprised me. Drones and the much-maligned projectiles tied for first. I wonder if the planned updates to that weapon type got factored in already? Missiles, often considered second-class in PvP but awesome for PvE, came in very very close after that.

Last Week: Hull Sizes

Last week’s poll on hull sizes had a really interesting result, as I commented: “with the exception of destroyers (which need love), ship size and popularity have an almost perfect inverse correlation.”

In other words, the smaller the ship, the more people like it.

Hull size poll

I haven’t had a poll here in a while. So, what’s your favorite hull size? I’ve lumped in the mining barges and exhumers with industrials, though I expect to run a specific poll for those sorts of things later.

  • Cruiser (29%, 20 Votes)
  • Battlecruiser (27%, 19 Votes)
  • Battleship (7%, 5 Votes)
  • Destroyer (4%, 3 Votes)

OOC: Poll on Command ships

For my first poll, let’s look at command ships. What’s your favorite of the eight, and why?

Poll closes in one week. Be sure to comment about why you made your choice!

(Yes, EVE Warrior inspired this one in part.)

Terminology for the demigods

I asked folks the other day which term they prefer: “capsuleer” or “podder”, neglecting to include the common “pod pilot” as well. As you might expect from as varied a bunch as make up our little community, the answers didn’t reflect any sort of consensus.

“Capsuleer” probably has been the most popular term for a while. Mynxee likes this one: “It speaks of adventure and has a bit of an elitist ring to it, as fitting for our status in New Eden.” PsycheDiver and Scopique also prefer this one. I don’t like it because it has too many syllables and doesn’t roll off the tongue.

“Pod pilot” is also common, preferred by Kirith Kodachi for its “guttural” sound. It sounds very formal to me, though, although alliteration always attracts. (See what I did there?)

I like “podder” because it’s short, captures the meaning quickly, and has a quick burst of sound. PsycheDiver doesn’t prefer it, though, because it “sounds like someone who is always podding other capsuleers.” (I don’t have a problem with this, heh heh.)

And somebody always wants to be different, like Biomassed who chooses “none of the above”.

What about you?
